The Truth

Hello all. This is my first post in quite some time. As I posted  a while back my computer took a dive. And I decided not to get it fixed. I'm actually typing away on my wife's work computer. My eventual plan is to just go out and pick up a cheap laptop, but until then, I'll try and steal some time away on this one when I need it. My locked up computer isn't the only reason I've been absent these last few months. Oh, work had a lot to do with it. I did one of those huge superhero extravaganzas that are all the rage these days (I've got another one lined up for next year). This took quite a bit of time away but the main reason I've been quiet is that I just needed to step away for a while. After seven plus years of writing this blog, I was a little tapped out. It had started to feel like a chore rather than something I looked forward to. The well was dry. Now that I've had some time away and learned a few things, and had some time to ponder a few things, maybe I can come up with some posts that, if not informative, may at least be interesting. As always, please email me with any ideas or questions. If you're a dolly or key grip with some experience, hell, I'll even give you a guest post. So I'm going to try and crank this thing back up again. Thankfully, Azurgrip has helped keep it alive. I'll try and be around a little more. Anyhoo, I just wanted to check in and let you guys know I'm going to hopefully be around a little more. Meanwhile, I've got the Captain and Netflix on a Friday night.

Welcome back. Your voice has been missed, but I hear you on the blog-as-a-chore issue. Been feeling a bit of that myself lately...

Dear D.

Thank you for the truth :-) I can imagine your wel is dried up. It is honorouble you have been finding subjects to write about in the last years and not falling back to previous subjects, repeating yourself. In the end after 35 subjects most of our work is said and done.
However I do like your stories on how you have resolved compound dolly-moves. Also the way you communicate with operators or the FP. That does help me (feeling supported) when doing my job.

I would love to have the ability to tell others how I am doing my job and how I am trying to figure out complex rigs or compound moves but my non-native english is keeping me away from it. also it is more close to rigging-grip/ key-grip then it is dolly-grip.

Most of the time when I am on a (commercial)job I do prefer the moves to be done on one or two axles only (only pan and track, preferlable track only) I do prefer to use a curved track instead of tracking straight and panning simultaniously and hoping you stop moving both at the same time and with the right framing :- )

Or doing a jib down and a tilt-up and track-out for pivoting around a bottle of bear... I do prefer to make a rig which accomplish that shot while just using one axle: A big pendular rig where the camera is pointing to the center of the circle your are moving the camera.

My stories would always need pictures to finish it of and when I am on the job there is hardly time (and focus) on taking pictures :-(

Back on your subject: please keep postin and although you might have the impression you are repeating yourself I will always read it as a new story with a new perspective.

Stay level!

Cheers,

Onno
